Huge new ‘beach’ with giant wave machine & surf lagoon to open at £50million UK water attraction
A NEW mammoth ‘beach’ is set to welcome in punters at a £50million water attraction.
Wave Park in Coleshill, Warwickshire is set to be the largest in the UK and boasts a giant wave machine and a 5.4-acre man-made surf lagoon.
Bosses filed an application to North Warwickshire Borough Council seeking amendments to the surf house building, lagoon, parking area, maintenance hub and service yard, Coventry Live reported.
The approved submission also included a new western ‘beach’.
It’s now set to cost £50million, with new investors Stoneweg InfraSport, a new partnership between the former and Teras Capital, backing the project.
The main attraction will be a 5.4acre surf lagoon WaveGarden, creating 1,000 waves an hour up to two metres tall, along with lessons and rentals.
An urban beach would also be created, which will be the largest in Europe.
There will also be an outdoor heated pool, as well as a skateboarding track and outdoor playground.
Restaurants, a coffee shop, retail stores and a co-working space would also be on-site.
An officer report explained: “Full planning permission was granted in 2020 for this recreational surfing centre with its associated infrastructure.
“There have been a couple of minor amendments since then and pre-commencement conditions have been discharged and the access road constructed.
“The current application seeks additional amendments to the approved scheme – the addition of a western ‘beach’ at the lagoon and the removal of the central pier.
“Consequential changes arise because of this. Additionally, there are some internal re-arrangements to the main club-house necessitating some elevation alterations.
“The reason for the changes arises from the latest technical and mechanical operation of the wave-making infrastructure.
“This results in the removal of the central pier and consequently the opportunity has been taken to review the perimeter of the lagoon resulting in a more natural design for the western shore.”
More waterpark openings
And it isn’t the only wave attraction setting up shop in the UK, with The Wave in Bristol one of the first to ever open in 2019.
A similar £55million attraction will open near Edinburgh this year with beachfront and surf lagoon.
Also similar is the £50million The Seahive in Deal near Kent, which will have a wave pool, splash area and hotel.
The Seahive founder Jim Storey said he created the project due to Kent’s lack of surf, despite it’s long coastline.
He said: “Kent is not renowned for its surfing at all, in fact, a lot of people who love surfing drive six hours to Cornwall or hop on a flight somewhere abroad.”
But the biggest water attraction set to open in the UK is Therme Manchester.
First announced back in 2019, the £250m waterpark will have huge swimming pools, 35 slides and an indoor beach.
Steam rooms and saunas, a swim up bar and ‘living’ waterslides will also be included when it opens in 2025.
Meanwhile, in the capital, Wave London will be the Big Smoke’s first inland surfing centre when it opens to the public.
The attraction, which is still in the planning stages, will be located in Lee Valley Regional Park in Enfield, north London.
Developers are planning to transform 100 acres of the regional into a paradise for surfing enthusiasts.
