Dan Campbell’s Comments About Coordinator Hire Should Excite Patriots
The Patriots filled out their vacant coordinator positions this week, and one of them earned major praise from a prominent head coach.
New England reportedly hired Terrell Williams to replace DeMarcus Covington as defensive coordinator. Williams worked with Mike Vrabel with the Tennesee Titans and earned the head coach’s trust to the point where he filled in for him for an exhibition game.
Vrabel isn’t the only coach who has a lot of respect for Williams. The veteran coach joined the Detroit Lions for the 2024 season after the Titans fired Vrabel. Williams quickly garnered praise from Dan Campbell.
“I can tell you this, Terrell (Williams), who — I’ve got a lot of confidence in Terrell Williams as our D-Line coach, I think he really is — he’s the best D-Line coach in this league,” Campbell told reporters on May 29, per Pride of Detroit. “And if he’s not, then you can argue what place he is.”
Campbell overlapped with Williams while they were on the Miami Dolphins, but the 50-year-old also earned praise from general manager Brad Holmes and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
The respect he has around the league and from players who’ve credited him for elevating their careers should excite the Patriots organization. New England regressed to 30th in EPA per play in 2024, and Vrabel hopes that can improve if Williams can achieve the same success he did in Tennesee and Detroit.
