Puello vs Martin and Tellez vs Williams round out Tank vs Roach
The Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Jr PPV is complete with the addition of Alberto Puello vs Sandor Martin and Yoenis Tellez vs Julian WIlliams
PBC’s March 1st Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Jr PPV main card is now complete. In addition to the previously revealed WBA super lightweight title fight between Jose Valenzuela and Gary Antuanne Russell, the show will see Alberto Puello defend his WBC 140-pound title against Sandor Martin and top super welterweight prospect Yoenis Tellez battle former unified champ Julian Williams.
Puello (23-0, 10 KO), a former WBA titlist who failed a drug test after winning the title against Batyr Akhmedov, upset the aforementioned Russell for the interim WBC belt last June. This was meant to segue into a shot at the winner of Devin Haney’s mandated clash with Martin (42-3, 15 KO), only for Haney to voluntarily relinquish his belt and the WBC to install Puello in his place.
As I’ve said before, odds are it won’t be a particularly compelling fight, but both men are capable and proven technicians. Should be competitive at the very least.
“This is my time, my stage and I’m ready to put on a show that fans will never forget,” said Puello. “When we step into that ring, it’s going to be fireworks. I’m going to bring the best version of myself and do whatever it takes to leave with the victory. I’m doing this for the Dominican Republic, this fight is for them and I’m going to make them proud.”
“A new super lightweight king will be crowned on March 1. Alberto Puello has some experience, but he won’t be prepared for what I bring to the ring in Brooklyn. That beautiful WBC belt is coming home with me to Spain.”
Tellez (9-0, 7 KO) is among the more prominent of the “new-school” Cuban knockout machines, though he’s yet to beat anyone of note. Williams (29-4-1, 17 KO) is his biggest-name foe to date, but he’s also 2-3 this decade.
The interim WBA title will be on the line while Terence Crawford chases Canelo. The fact that Williams is ranked no. 11 at 154 when he hasn’t won at that weight in nearly six years is, well, just WBA things.
