NYC nonprofit seeks volunteers to support lunch program
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A West Side non-profit needs volunteers to help with their lunch program.
On cold days like this one, West Side non-profit saves the day and keeps thousands of older New Yorkers warm and fed.
They need dozens of volunteers to keep their thriving lunch program.
Since 1977, it’s been a home away from home.
Organizers say it’s the volunteers who make it happen.
They have a shortage of helping hands. Email Volunteer@encorenyc.org if you want to help.
Twin brothers, 64-year-old Robert and Richard Moore from Harlem say they have been coming to Encore Community Center on West 49th Street for more than four years for the company and to stay warm.
Hundreds of older New York City adults rely on programs here every day, from free lunch to social services. Up to 50 volunteers give their time every day.
Rooselie Brutus, a Brooklyn worker, works nearby and gives a few hours of her time, which makes a world of difference.
PIX11 News first visited in the summer when the building needed air conditioning and a new elevator. Since our story, nearly half a million dollars have been secured to make the repairs.
Encore has three locations here on the West Side.
