The 2 Best Girl Power Movies On Netflix This January
There was a huge movement for girl power back in the ’90s. You can thank the Spice Girls and the grungy alternative riot grrrl movement.
That doesn’t mean the need for a little pro-women propaganda (in a good way) ended the moment they canceled My So-Called Life, though. Even though we’re in 2025, there’s still work to be done. So if you need something powerful to get you pumped to start advocating for yourself as a woman, catch these two killer movies on Netflix right now. There’s a classic that hasn’t gone out of style, and a newer movie that shows how tough girls still have it.
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Based on a real badass person, this Oscar-winning film stars Julia Roberts as the titular woman who, despite not looking the part according to everyone around her, managed to become a lawyer and win a landmark humanitarian case. This movie shows that you can do anything–especially if you don’t listen to the people who tell you you can’t. Though it’s 25 years old, it’s still a must-watch that’s aged like perfection.
Moxie
Based on a young adult novel of the same name, Moxie finds the girls of a modern high school going through all of the sexist stuff that should have been abolished long ago. One of these teens decides to take a page from her riot grrrl mom’s past and create an anonymous zine to call out the shitty behavior by the boys of her school and the administration who lets it happen. It’s an inspiring movie that shows the dangers of toxic masculinity and what it means to create a community.
