How have the Los Angeles wildfires impacted the Oscars this year?
Due to the wildfires, the Academy delayed the Oscar nominations announcement by six days, from Friday, Jan. 17, to Thursday, Jan. 23. The Academy also extended the voting window by several days to allow those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires additional time to cast their ballots.
The Academy also canceled or delayed several events, including the Oscar nominees luncheon (initially set for Monday, Feb. 10, and now canceled), and the Scientific and Technical Awards (initally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, and now indefinitely delayed).
The Oscars ceremony, however, will not move off its Sunday, March 2 date.
The Academy has also donated at least $1 million to the Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF) to help Los Angeles residents impacted by the wildfires.
Will the Oscars still happen this year?
The 2025 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. Due to the wildfires, the show’s date will not change.
When are the Oscars?
The 97th annual Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement on Jan. 15 that despite rumors that the 2025 Oscars would be canceled or delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the show will go on as planned and include a tribute to responders.
“After consultation with ABC, our board, and other key stakeholders in the Los Angeles and film communities, we have made the carefully considered decision to proceed with the 97th Oscars ceremony as planned on March 2,” Kramer said. “This year’s ceremony will include special moments acknowledging those who fought so bravely against the wildfires. We feel that we must go forward to support our film community and to use our global platform to bring attention to these critical moments in our history. The spirit of Los Angeles and our film community has always been one of resilience, and the Oscars represent not just a celebration of film, but the industry’s strength and unity in the face of adversity.”
Who are the Oscar nominees?
The 2025 Oscar nominees will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 23. According to the odds, films such as Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked are expected to secure several Oscar nominations. Actors predicted to appear on Oscar ballots include Timothee Chalamet, Kieran Culkin, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Zoe Saldana.
How to watch and stream the Oscars
This year, for the first time, the Academy Awards will stream live on Hulu in addition to the ceremony’s broadcast television availability via ABC. In addition to the live stream on Hulu, the Oscars will also be available on Hulu the following day.
Who is hosting the Oscars this year?
Former late-night host and comic Conan O’Brien hosts this year’s Oscars ceremony. “We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy Presiden Janet Yang said in a statement last year while announcing O’Brien as host. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best — honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”
“America demanded it, and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars,” O’Brien said last year in his typical self-deprecating fashion.
However, due to the Los Angeles wildfires—which have left thousands of residents without homes and caused billions of dollars in property damage—the Oscars ceremony is expected to be a somber and muted affair. Kramer said the show would include a tribute to wildfire victims and a celebration of first responders.
