Hospital patient says mice scurrying around ward are keeping him up all night
Patients have complained about a hospital ‘infested’ with rodents after a patient filmed a large mouse scurrying under his bed.
Daniel Hendron, 32, was receiving treatment for a leg infection at Walsall Manor Hospital this week – but was kept awake by ‘screeching’ mice.
The dad-of-three said some nurses were too scared to step foot in the ward, and when he complained to hospital staff, he claims nurses told him they reported a mice infestation in November.
Daniel said: ‘The mice are everywhere. I’ve got an open wound, how can this be a safe or hygienic place for me? There are at least five to six mice at any one time. They come through the radiators and through holes in the walls. It’s hell.
‘It’s normally anytime from 10 pm onwards. I can’t even walk to the toilet, I have to wee in a pot because I don’t want a mouse running up my leg. I asked the staff to spray and mop the floor, but it hasn’t made any difference. The mice keep coming back.’
Daniel said the mice seemed to have ‘taken a shine’ to him and kept coming under his bed, making it impossible to sleep.
He added: ‘I’m worried I’ll wake up and find a mouse chewing my leg. They are so loud they screech at night. I can’t believe a UK hospital in the 21st century is infested with mice and patients have to live it with.’
Daniel said he has repeatedly told staff about the mice and has posted regular videos on Facebook showing them running around patients’ beds and under medical equipment.
He also claimed some of the nurses are too scared to deliver medication
Daniel said he had begged the nurses to move him to a different ward but they ‘say there’s nothing they can do’.
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust apologised for any distress caused, with a spokesperson adding: ‘Pest control measures in place, alongside rigorous infection prevention and control processes.
‘Our teams have dealt with this issue and, in addition, we have increased cleaning in the affected areas as well as checked for any potential access holes.’
