The beauty industry has become overtaken with so many celebrity launches and influencer endorsements as of late, it’s challenging to know what’s worth the hype and who’s actually using what they say they are. However, as a beauty writer with close to six years of experience, I’ve found that there are a handful of celebs I’ve put my trust in when it comes to product recommendations. One of my favorites? Victoria Beckham. Over the years, she’s made a name for herself as a 90s fashion icon and, more recently, a beauty guru when she started her cosmetics line in 2019. Since then, there’s been one product she consistently swears by — Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream.
In case you’re unfamiliar, The Rich Cream is a luxury moisturizer loved by so many that it’s so hard to keep track. After being introduced to the moisturizer and trying it for the first time, Beckham said she “became totally obsessed” and even partnered with the brand to create her own line, Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader. And because she constantly claims to use this product and many more from brand over the years — even after starting her own (which most celebs don’t do) — I was intrigued to see if The Rich Cream is really worth the hype, and its hefty price tag.
As I said above, I have close to six years of experience trying and testing an array of beauty products — especially skincare (I have the battle scars to prove it). In that time, I’ve had the privilege to get my hands on some high-priced items that claim to be miracles in a bottle but fall short. However, Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream is not one of those disappointments.
It’s a high-performance formula that visibly enhances the appearance of your skin. It’s made with Professor Bader’s signature TFC8 compound, a custom blend of amino acids, peptides, and vitamins — all the wonderful things that help skin look its best. It contains argan and avocado, evening primrose, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E.
The Rich Cream pumps out relatively light at first, but when applied, you can feel its “richness. ” It offers ample moisture and hydration to your skin without leaving it greasy. It’s the perfect nighttime moisturizer since it does feel relatively thick compared to its sister product, The Cream. Since it’s currently winter and I live in an attic-style apartment where the air is always dry, I look for as much moisture as possible in a product without totally clogging my pores, and for me, that’s The Rich Cream.
Now, I noticed only a couple of downsides with The Rich Cream. When you buy the bigger bottles — the 50ml ($300) and 100ml sizes ($540) — it’s hard to get every last drop because the bottles are encased in a pretty plastic tube, so you can’t unscrew them compared to the smaller ones. And at those prices, you’re going to want every, single drop. Another thing to note is that the product does, indeed, expire. That’s both a good and a meh thing to know. It’s good because that tells you that there are truly active ingredients in the bottle that work hard to repair your skin. What’s not so great about that is that if you let it go bad (which, to be honest, the product is so good, you probably won’t — but you never know!), you’re out of an expensive product.
I’ve had the luxury of owning three of Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream, and I let half of a small bottle go bad during COVID-19 (life was a crazy roller coaster for me back then; so we listen and we don’t judge, please!). When I tried to use it again, I noticed its consistency wasn’t the same, and the product began to separate as any old product would. But, because I’m bougie-frugal, I refused to throw it out. Instead, I just used it as a hand cream and on my ears (those get dry too during this time of year), and it still worked well and was absorbed quickly by my skin.
Overall, the Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream is worth the hype, particularly during the colder months. If you have the money, it’s worth buying — especially compared to its more expensive competitors. The Rich Cream is phenomenal, as are some of the professor’s other products like The Foaming Cleanser and The Retinol Serum. If you’ve been considering adding this gem of a product to your winter skincare routine, don’t wait. Your future skin will thank you (and me) later.
