MLK Day of Service returns in Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve."
That's how 300 volunteers honored his legacy in Buffalo on Monday.
"There's an African proverb that says, 'You want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together,' and that is what's moving about this, people are coming together," said Faustenia L. Morrow, who started the MLK Day of Service in Buffalo five years ago with Monarch of Infinite Possibilities. "They don't even know each other and they want to help."
It started with just 20 people volunteering and now hundreds unite to lend a hand through 23 different service projects at local churches and non-for-profit organizations.
With tools, cleaning supplies, and camaraderie, volunteers helped local organizations like New Beginnings COGIC with spring cleaning, and helped create a sound stage for their church.
"One snowflake can't do much damage, but you put a million snowflakes together it can shut down a city," said Robert Lowe, pastor of New Beginnings COGIC. "You bring Buffalo together with our sense of community, love the city of good neighbors, there's nothing we can't overcome, and there's no enemy we can't conquer. We will be able to do it, because we are better together."
