Louisiana State Police to increase patrols for winter storm
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- Louisiana State Police will be increasing patrols during this week's winter storm.
Trooper First Class Tiah Larvadain said they are doubling staff and their hourly shifts to monitor roadways and bridges that may ice over. Unsafe, iced areas will be barricaded off.
"If there is something that is closed and has a barricade that's posted, not only is it illegal, but it's also unsafe for you to travel around those barricades," Larvadain said.
State Police advises drivers to reduce speed, allow extra time to reach your destination and increase following distance behind vehicles.
"It's going to take a minute for four troopers and first responders to be able to get to you safely. Like I said, we want everyone to take their time," Larvadain said. "We do have some vehicles that are equipped with four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, to be able to get through these areas. But safety is the main thing for first responders, for our DOTD personnel, as well as the residents and visitors of the state."
Drivers are asked to report any hazardous conditions to Louisiana State Police.
