Lake Shawnee will soon see 3,500 pounds of trout
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Lake Shawnee will get restocked with more than 3,000 pounds of rainbow trout for the start of 2025.
Shawnee County Parks + Rec (SCP+R) announced on social media that it's almost time for the annual winter trout stocking at Lake Shawnee. On Friday, Jan. 24, 3,500 lbs. of rainbow trout will be released into the lake. According to the social media post, because trout are not native to Lake Shawnee, the trout are brought from Crystal Lakes Fisheries in Ava, Missouri.
After restocking the lake, fishing will close at Lake Shawnee for a week so the trout can get acclimated to their surroundings and disperse. Fishing at the lake will reopen at 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.
Community members are invited to watch the trout restocking at 1 p.m. at the main boat ramp on Beach Drive, off of Southeast 29th Street.
A trout fishing permit is required before you can fish at Lake Shawnee, or any other lake in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) sells trout fishing permits. Adult permits are $14.50, while youth permits are $7. Permits are being sold until March 31.
