Emmerdale fans fuming as they slam soap’s new family and point out huge blunder – did you spot it?
EMMERDALE fans have pointed out a huge blunder with the show’s newest family – did you spot it?
In recent months, the ITV soap has been building up a new clan in the Dales.
Emmerdale fans have pointed out blunders with the soap’s newest clan[/caption] The Miligans have expanded in recent months[/caption] They are at the centre of a dark story with villain Anthony[/caption]The Miligan family currently comprises Caleb (William Ash), Ruby (Beth Cordingly) and Steph (Georgia Jay).
Caleb and Ruby’s son Nicky (Lewis Cope) left last year, while Ruby’s dad Anthony (Nicholas Day) is currently on the scene.
Taking to Reddit, fans noticed “mistakes” concerning how the characters had been written.
One viewer noted how writers “can’t decide everything about characters from the start”, in reference to the Miligans.
They wrote: “The main problem is their accents. When [Caleb and Nicky] were cast the writers didn’t know the others would be Southern.
“I’m still waiting for an explanation of why Steph & Nicky sound so different. A lot (inc Beth C) believe it was due to Steph being sent to boarding school.
“She was 14, so she would have already developed a northern accent, so she must have adopted the southern. Nicky was raised in Newcastle.
“They might’ve moved there after sending Steph away, but he would’ve been old enough to have already developed a Manc/ Yorks accent.”
Continuing, they addressed confusion as to why Ruby decided to double-barrel her name – given her harrowing past.
A recent storyline revealed Anthony abused his daughter when she was a teenager – with the villain also seemingly revealed as Steph’s biological father.
The viewer questioned, therefore, why Ruby would want to keep Anthony’s surname at all.
Addressing the accents concern, a fellow fan responded: “I feel like Steph being [received pronunciation] because she went to boarding school makes sense but nicky being a geordie was confusing as it seemed like they all moved around a lot.”
Another added: “They could easily fix it by recasting Nicky and just retconning the Newcastle thing.
“I liked Lewis Cope but sometimes I felt he couldn’t hold up in scenes with better actors like Beth Cordingly.”
Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
