Duke Blows Stanford Out, 74-49
Don’t look now, but this could be the best Duke team of the Lawson era.
Replacing a legendary coach is one of the most difficult things to do in sports. Although Duke has done a great job of that with Jon Scheyer replacing Mike Krzysewski on the men’s side, almost no one pulls it off.
And as of right now, Stanford’s women basketball has not.
Tara Van DerVeer, who coached the Cardinal for 38 seasons, retiring last spring.
Her replacement, assistant Katy Paye, came into the game at Duke at 10-7 and leaves 10-8 as the Blue Devils just smoked the Cardinals, 74-49.
The first quarter was relatively even with Duke pulling out to an 18-14 lead but in the second, the Blue Devils ran away from the Cardinal, 25-7, building a 43-21 lead.
Stanford regrouped in the third quarter, 17-14 as coach Kara Lawson said that Duke “got a little muddy. We got undisciplined, we started fouling, and they were able to beat us in that quarter, but then we regrouped and in the fourth and were able to win that one.”
As Lawson says, Duke bounced back in the fourth, outscoring Stanford 17-11.
Ashlon Jackson led the way with 16 points. Delaney Thomas kicked in 12 points and 10 boards. Taina Mair had 13 points and six rebounds of her own.
Nunu Agara had 15 to pace Stanford. She also had 10 rebounds.
We’ve talked about how Duke has been forcing turnovers like crazy and Stanford had 20 in this game.
The Blue Devils also held the Cardinal to 18-55/4-9 shooting. That’s 32.7 overall and 44.4 for threes.
Duke is now 15-4 and 6-1 in the ACC. Next up - a trip to SMU this Thursday.
