Dad-son boogie boarders rescued near Ecola State Park
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A boogie boarding father and his teenage son were airlifted to safety after becoming trapped on a rock in the Pacific Ocean near Indian Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The pair was reported missing around 12:30 p.m., Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue said in a release. At first, emergency responders had trouble spotting them, but did so after about 12 minutes on a rock.
Because of the rock's location and the ocean conditions, the US Coast Guard was called. When the Coast Guard swimmers arrived, they helped evacuate the man and the 15-year-old by helicopter to Ecola State Park. Neither was hurt and both refused medical help.
Authorities noted it's the third time in a week emergency responders rescued boogie boarders in the same area, first on January 13 then again on January 17.
At the time of this rescue, a Beach Hazards Statement had been issued for sneaker waves on the north coast, officials said. When a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect, you should stay off jetties, rocks and logs near the surf zone.
