Tottenham will sack Ange Postecoglou if he fails to win Carabao Cup – Pundit claims
The pressure is mounting on Ange Postecoglou in his second season at Tottenham Hotspur, with former midfielder Jamie O’Hara asserting that the Australian could face the sack if he does not win the Carabao Cup.
Spurs form raises serious questions about Postecoglou’s future
Tottenham Hotspur’s recent defeat to North London rivals Arsenal has left Ange Postecoglou facing the most significant challenge of his tenure thus far.
The 2-1 loss at the Emirates not only marked a painful setback against their fiercest adversaries but also highlighted deeper issues within the squad as they now find themselves closer to the relegation zone than the European places.
Currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, Tottenham’s struggles have become a source of growing concern for supporters and pundits alike.
With only eight points separating them from the bottom three, the focus has shifted from ambitions of European qualification to fears of being drawn into a relegation battle.
Tottenham could sack Ange Postecoglou – says Jamie O’Hara
Amidst this backdrop, Jamie O’Hara, a former Tottenham midfielder and now a pundit, has not minced his words regarding Postecoglou’s future.
He believes that failure to secure silverware in the form of the Carabao Cup could prove terminal for the manager’s position, especially given Tottenham’s recent history of managerial changes under chairman Daniel Levy.
Jamie O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “If Tottenham don’t win the Carabao Cup, Ange Postecoglou will be sacked. If Spurs finish the season in the bottom half of the table and don’t win a trophy, Daniel Levy will not hesitate to replace him.
“You can’t lose 11 games, be in 13th place halfway through the season, and expect to stay as manager of Tottenham.
“The Premier League is the ‘bread and butter’, that’s his primary objective – finish in the top five. Levy’s main concern is the Premier League; Jose Mourinho was sacked for his league performance a week before a cup final! I have no doubts Postecoglou could face the same treatment if he doesn’t turn things around, especially if a manager becomes available that Levy likes the look of.
“Tottenham look a million miles away from qualifying for European football next season and Postecoglou will be hoping he can pick up some points in the league or pull off a result against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup to keep him in the job.
“Tottenham won’t win the Europa League because they’re too inconsistent; they’ll come up against a better side in the latter stages of the competition and they’ll lose over two legs. Winning the Carabao Cup is Postecoglou’s only chance of staying in the job.”
Tottenham’s precarious path: Is there hope for Postecoglou?
O’Hara further highlighted the importance of avoiding another damaging result in their next league fixture, suggesting that a loss at Goodison Park could plunge Tottenham deeper into trouble.
“If Tottenham lose to Everton, you can forget any chance of European football; they are in a relegation fight! It is unacceptable that Tottenham are in the position they are in.
“They are eight points from the drop – which is closer than they are to finishing eighth and playing in Europe next season.
“Their key players need to return from injury as quickly as possible. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are essential to Tottenham’s defence; they look really open without them.
“If they can return from injury, Tottenham will look a lot more stable at the back and they will concede far fewer goals.
“I like Archie Gray, but he is filling in at the moment and is playing out of position. Radu Dragusin did not have a great game in the North London Derby; if Arsenal had a proper striker, they would have conceded more than two goals.”
Despite Jamie O’Hara’s bleak prediction, recent reports suggest that Ange Postecoglou retains the backing of the Tottenham Hotspur board, at least for the time being.
