Israel violates Ceasefire, 8 killed in Gaza attack, 25 injured
Arab media reports have indicated that Gaza was once again targeted by an attack just hours after the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect. As a result, at least 8 people were killed and 25 others were injured.
The Al-Alam news network reported on Sunday, January 19 that Israel violated the ceasefire agreement by launching new attacks on various locations in Gaza.
According to the media outlet, the ceasefire, which was supposed to take effect at 8:30 AM local time, was violated around 10:00 AM (local time) when Israel launched an attack on Gaza.
Reuters news agency also reported an explosion in Gaza, which occurred after the ceasefire was implemented. According to the terms of the ceasefire, both Israel and Hamas were to halt reciprocal attacks to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the release of hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Arab media outlets, quoting Israeli military spokesperson Herzl Halevi, reported that Israel had targeted parts of central and northern Gaza in what it described as an action to “maintain the security of the residents of the occupied territories.”
The breach of the ceasefire agreement by Israel has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the agreement and the prospects for peace in the region. The continuing violence despite efforts to establish a temporary halt to hostilities undermines the trust between the parties and complicates the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The international community has called for a swift resolution to the conflict and for both sides to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire in order to alleviate the suffering of civilians and pave the way for a lasting peace. Without genuine commitment to peace, the cycle of violence is likely to continue, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and instability in the region.
