Turkish Coast Guard arrests 32 Afghan refugees
Turkey’s Coast Guard has reported the arrest of 32 Afghan refugees, including 9 children, at the shores of the Ayvacik region in Canakkale. The Coast Guard Command stated that these migrants were attempting to leave Turkey “illegally” and were identified and detained.
Turkish media, quoting the Coast Guard Command in the northern Aegean Sea, reported that a group of refugees was spotted while traveling in a rubber boat in the region.
After completing legal procedures, the detained refugees were transferred to the local immigration office.
Recently, Turkey’s Coast Guard announced that seven refugees drowned while their boat was being intercepted in the Aegean Sea near the country’s western shores.
According to Turkish media reports, operations to identify and detain undocumented migrants across the country are ongoing.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, thousands of people have entered Turkey through difficult migration routes via Iran. Many of these migrants are attempting to reach Greece by sea after entering Turkey.
The escalating migration crisis, particularly in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, has led to an increasing number of refugees attempting perilous journeys through Turkey.
The ongoing challenges of migration highlight the need for greater international cooperation and support to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations.
Efforts must focus on addressing the root causes of migration, providing humanitarian aid, and improving conditions for refugees, while also enforcing border controls to prevent dangerous crossings that often result in tragic outcomes.
