Sports Briefs: Means, Morgan power San Marin to MLK victory over Casa Grande
San Marin carried over the momentum from Friday’s overtime win against The Branson School to Saturday’s Martin Luther King Jr.-John Lewis Memorial showcase for another big victory.
The Mustangs, who led by one at halftime, surged to a 70-54 win over North Bay rival Casa Grande. The Mustangs’ Grant Means scored 15 points in the second to finish with a game-high 28, in addition to four rebounds and four assists. Miller Morgan posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. JD Rhodes directed the show with seven assists for San Marin and Ryan Houlahan played solid defense.
San Marin continues its five-game homestead on Tuesday with a non-league game against San Domenico.
- Archie Williams came out of the gates fast for a 80-63 victory over Justin-Siena on Saturday at San Marin High. The Peregrine Falcons (12-6) raced out to a 29-12 first-quarter lead with uptempo play and an active and disruptive defense. Juniors Ephraim Sohn and Grady Stewart each logged 20 points for Archie Williams. Sohn added four assists and Stewart had four assists and three rebounds.
- Two teams riding a hot streak went head to head Saturday in the Martin Luther King Jr.-John Lewis Memorial as Acalanes beat Marin Catholic, 56-42, as the Dons stretched their winning steak to seven games. Marin Catholic had won five of its previous six games entering the weekend. After a taut first half, Acalanes pulled away in the third quarter as the Dons outscored the Wildcats 15-2. Theo Pontes led Marin Catholic with 11 points, while Joe Hammond added six points, four assists and seven steals. Oliver Myers finished with six points and four steals.
- The Branson School beat International, 62-39, at College of Marin on Saturday. The Bulls (10-9, 1-2 MCAL) are scheduled to play Piedmont (9-7) in the MLK Oakland High Showcase at Merritt College on Monday.
- Redwood headed north to Santa Rosa for Saturday’s 56-43 non-league victory over Montgomery. The Giants (12-4, 3-0 MCAL) are scheduled to face Marin Catholic in Tuesday’s action.
- Terra Linda fell to Piedmont, 61-54, in a non-league contest Saturday. The Trojans (13-5, 2-1 MCAL) are scheduled to play league foe Archie Williams on Tuesday.
Girls basketball
Quincy Dean posted her second double-double in as many days as San Marin picked up a non-league win on the road against Dublin, 49-44. Dean had 11 points, 18 rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs, while Olivia Maffei added a lift off the bench with three 3-pointers for nine points. Abby Bartholo finished with 10 points for the Mustangs (15-5, 2-1 MCAL), who host Archie Williams on Friday.
- Marin Catholic beat Miramonte, 45-35, in Saturday’s non-league action. The Wildcats (12-7, 3-0 MCAL) bring a five-game winning streak into Tuesday’s contest against league rival Redwood.
Prep wrestling
Novato High heavyweight Braeden Carroll placed second in the 287-pound class, losing the ultimate tiebreaker to Cormac Anderson of Spanish Springs (Sparks, Nev). Carroll (34-6) advanced through the bracket after a first-round bye, with a quick pin and a walkover.
Tam High sophomore Dylan Hayes pinned Franklin senior Eduardo Ruiz to secure fifth place in the 192-pound class at the King of the Mat tournament in Windsor on Saturday. Terra Linda’s Tristan Collins, after a second-round pinfall loss to Hayes, worked his way through the blood rounds to win the consolation title.
Novato’s Jonathan Bartnicki won three consecutive blood round matches and earned the 177-pound class consolation title as he pinned Antioch’s Curtis Tucker in his final match.
- Sofi De Jesus of Archie Williams High placed second at 112 pounds in the San Ramon Valley Girls Invitational on Saturday. Archie Williams High’s Rainer Grabernkort (115) went 3-2 with a pair of pinfall wins at the San Ramon Valley Boys Invitational.
Women’s basketball
Redwood High grad Kylie Horstmeyer scored a team-high 13 points during San Diego’s 68-66 loss to Pepperdine in Saturday’s WCC contest.
