Arctic air to chill NYC following snowstorm, warns National Weather Service
NEW YORK (PIX11) – After a looming snowstorm hits the Tri-State Area on Sunday, arctic air is expected to chill New York City and the surrounding areas.
According to a post on the National Weather Service's X account, the National Weather Service is warning that there might be significant impacts on infrastructure and public health.
“After the snow ends Sunday night, the main story will be arctic air through much of next week,” read the social media post. “Temps are likely to be well below freezing from late Sunday night until Friday. Wind chills Monday night into early Tue -5 to -15°F and into early Wed 0 to -10°F.”
Artic Wind is expected to impact
- Poorly insulated water pipes cause them to freeze or burst
- Possible impacts to utility infrastructure
- Public health, temperature may cause hypothermia or frostbite with prolonged exposure and lack of proper clothing.
Avoiding frostbite and hypothermia by
- Checking the Forecast
- Adjust your schedule by avoiding being outside during the coldest part of the day, typically the early morning.
- The weather service recommends protecting your pets, livestock, and property by ensuring they are not overly exposed to extreme cold and have plenty of food and water that has not frozen.
- Drivers should fill up the tank. Ensure their car or vehicle has at least half a gas tank during extreme cold so they can stay warm if they become stranded.
- Dress warmly by using layers, gloves, hats, and scarves.
