People left horrified over one-bedroom ‘Squid Game’ flats for sale INSIDE unused shopping centre – would you live here?
IT’S the Netflix series that’s sent the web wild – but would you ever live in a flat that social media users say resembles something out of ”Squid Game”?
The colourful £125k one-bedroom flat, based in Essex, could be yours – however, there’s one major catch.
While some reckoned the apartments overall had a very ‘dystopian’ feel, others were fond of the concept[/caption] One horrified TikTok user compared the apartments to ‘something out of Squid Games’[/caption]The flat, which features a large lounge area, a kitchen, a separate dining room, as well as a bedroom and a bathroom right next to it, is based… inside a shopping mall.
Located in the heart of Grays town centre with easy access to local shops, coffee spots and other amenities, the flats sit inside the unused Queensgate shopping centre.
What may be even more bizarre is that each of the flats, which are situated at the top floor of the building, even have their very own mailboxes.
The one-bedroom properties, all in different colours, are situated with lift access and feature several windows each – however, not much information is available about the lack of fresh air circulating around.
Externally the block is situated providing excellent access to Grays mainline station with links into London and various other local transport links, meaning this location is proving increasingly popular with commuters and prospective tenants.
Although this hasn’t been confirmed by the real estate company Rightmove which is advertising the one-bedroom flats, the £125k homes appear to come with the essential appliances, including the washing machine, fridge and an oven.
Unsurprisingly, the unusual flat setting has taken the internet by storm, with one critic dubbing the bizarre apartments ”dystopian”.
”This is inside a shopping centre – which they have now converted into flats,” said the TiKTok user only known as Housing Horrors.
”Everything just feels really fake and weird, it’s almost like watching something out of Squid Game.”
Although the average price of a one-bedroom flat in Essex ranges anywhere from £165,000 to over £300,000, the man still reckoned the £125k price tag was ”extortionate”.
”I do understand that it’s a one-bedroom flat, but honestly for the location, because it’s in a shopping centre, it just feels so weird.”
What’s more, he added in the video, buyers would also need to fork out a fortune to renovate the bizarre flat where ”everything is a bit dead”.
Totally baffled by the unconventional setting of the property, hundreds of social media users flocked to comments to share their thoughts – and it was a mixed bag of responses.
5 Tips to Get on The Property Ladder
Saving for your first property is tough, but it is possible. Here are a few steps for first-time buyers.
1. Cut back on luxuries and start saving
Consistent monthly saving is the best way to accumulate enough money to get on the ladder, for a deposit and purchase fees. To do this, you need to take a look at your monthly outgoings and think about what can be cut out – holidays, new clothes, weekly takeaway.
Using a savings calculator can help you to establish how long you will need to save for a deposit. Based on your income, you can figure out a realistic amount to save each month.
2. Have a realistic property search
Set a budget for the property price you would like to buy, and think realistically about the location and size of your property. While we all may want that house with a view or extra bedroom, can you afford it?
3. Research Help To Buy and Shared Ownership schemes
The government has introduced a few ways to help first-time-buyers get on the property ladder and they’re great for those on lower incomes or to buy a property in more expensive areas like London.
4. Consider buying with another person
Investing with somebody else you know is a sure way to get onto the property ladder. You only need to save half the amount you would otherwise, so you can work towards getting your property sooner.
You can invest with a friend, family or partner. Naturally, it is a big step and a huge commitment so be open and honest about what you expect from living together — if you haven’t already.
5. Talk to a mortgage broker and get your documents in order
A mortgage broker can tell you exactly how much you can borrow for a mortgage, what you will need to pay monthly and in upfront costs.
One thought: ”The pastel colours make it seem like an abandoned kids show set.”
Someone else chimed in: ”It’s giving the same feeling as when you walk around a conservatory showroom.”
But as dozens were gobsmacked by the flat, which they reckoned had ”no natural lighting”, others didn’t see an issue with living inside an old shopping mall.
”At least it shouldn’t be damp because it’s got like 2 roofs and loads of walls,” a fan of the flats wrote.
”It’s cool, unique and cheap. Needs updating inside but apart from that sounds like a great deal. Better than in old neglected block of flats,” another commented.
