DoorDash allows Ohioans to purchase THC, CBD products from home
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Just five months after recreational cannabis was legalized in Ohio, DoorDash is bringing hemp-derived products straight to Ohioans' doors.
DoorDash announced it would offer hemp-derived THC and CBD products in select states, including Ohio, for customers of legal age to order straight to their front doors. Of-age customers will see a "CBD/THC" tab in the DoorDash app, adorned with an icon of a soda can and small candy jar. Among the items eligible for delivery are CBD and THC gummies, beverages, mints, candies, snacks and oils.
Cannabis is a plant that contains more than 80 chemical compounds, but the best known are THC and CBD. In the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabis plants and products that contain no more than 0.3% THC were categorized as hemp and no longer classified as controlled substances, according to the FDA. Under the Farm Bill, THC and CBD extracted from hemp are now federally legal.
As DoorDash is offering hemp-based THC and CBD products, state regulations are more relaxed toward sales, allowing DoorDash to deliver these products. Although Ohio does not age-restrict CBD, a representative for DoorDash said customers must be at least 18 to purchase CBD products and at least 21 to purchase THC products.
DoorDash already uses ID verification measures for alcohol purchases, including third-party scanning technology to analyze and scan customer IDs. According to a DoorDash spokesperson, customers must confirm they understand an ID check will be mandatory to complete the delivery.
Once the order is delivered, customers will complete a four-step compliance check, including the ID verification technology, a physical ID check and an assessment of the customer to make sure they are not already intoxicated, the spokesperson said.
According to DoorDash, a growing number of people are seeking out CBD and THC products to relax or provide alternative products. DoorDash cites a Harris Poll survey of U.S. adults where nearly 75% of adults hoping to de-stress this year said they are considering incorporating THC or CBD products.
At least six other states join Ohio in the new market, according to spokespeople, who said Minnesota, Georgia, Kentucky, Iowa, Louisiana and Tennessee are also included. As part of the launch, DoorDash also partnered with hemp-infused beverage company Cann, offering customers $2 off a multipack purchase through DoorDash.
