6 tips for parents bringing their kids to Cebu’s Sinulog and Fiesta Señor 2025
CEBU, Philippines – Fiesta Señor and Sinulog are two of the most anticipated events in Cebu and because of that, there’s a high probability that most of the venues are going to be jam-packed.
Attending these celebrations, which are set to culminate on January 19, may be overwhelming for some tourists and devotees, especially for parents looking to bring their children to see the Senior Santo Niño or the Holy Child Jesus.
For those with kids who want to join in on the Fiesta Señor and Sinulog fun, here are some tips to ensure that you and your family would have a worry-free experience.
Stay hydrated
Hydration is essential so make sure to bring a water bottle. These religious events are known to have thousands of devotees, and staying out for too long can leave you and your children parched and drained from the heat.
It’s worth noting that there are limited seating capacities in venues like the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu. According to religious administrators, the Cebu church can only accommodate 5,000 people at a time.
Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, in a press conference on January 6, assured residents that there would be covered bleachers for festival-goers along Osmeña Boulevard and nearby areas.
The city government banned the use of glass bottles and other fragile containers during the fiesta celebration. Garcia urged attendees to bring their own water containers like tumblers.
Dress for the occasion
The Basilica just implemented a new dress code to show reverence for the sacred place.
While it can be tempting to dress your child in cute Santo Niño outfits or in sleeveless tops, it’s best to dress for mass when visiting the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu church.
In early October 2024, church administrators implemented a dress code policy which banned what they considered as “inappropriate attire.”
The list of clothing allowed in the basilica includes collared blouses with sleeves, knee-length or long dresses with sleeves, knee-length or long skirts, neckline tops with sleeves, polo or collared shirts, t-shirts or long-sleeved shirts, jeans or slacks, office wear or smart casual, and appropriate footwear.
Keep safe in crowds
The Fiesta Señor and Sinulog celebrations attract large crowds. It’s imperative to keep a close eye on your children.
In case you get separated due to a commotion, plan a meeting spot or teach your children to seek help from policemen and women who will be on patrol at designated stations and medical posts.
According to officials, more than 3,000 police personnel and force multipliers will be deployed during the Sinulog Grand Parade to ensure safety and assist those in need, especially lost children.
Carry the essentials
Prepare the necessities in accordance with your child’s age. If you’re bringing a toddler, remember to carry the essentials, such as wipes, diapers, and extra clothes.
It would be nice to bring a foldable chair with you as well. Fortunately, there will be vendors selling foldable chairs between P300 to P400 in downtown Cebu City and by the venues.
Since the heat can be overpowering at the venues, sun protection is a must. Bring some sunscreen, an umbrella or portable fan.
Etiquette matters
Who doesn’t love family time in museums? The Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu church has its own museum as well, which would make for a good experience for you and your little ones.
Upon entry at the Santo Niño Museum, remember that taking photos and videos are not allowed. It’s best to also teach your children to be respectful and calm, so as to avoid any accidents like hitting the artifacts and historical items.
Proper etiquette still matters when attending the novena masses so if your child likes to play with a phone or smart tablet, make sure to put it on silent or mute the device.
Pack some snacks
Pack some healthy, kid-friendly snacks to keep your babies well-fed throughout the celebration.
While there are plenty of street food options and ready-to-eat packed meals, it is safer to bring homemade lunches to prevent bad elements from entering your child’s body.
As it can get really hot during the celebration, the food may be left out in the sun for too long and may even be spoiled without your knowledge.
It’s better to have easy-to-eat options like biscuits, sandwiches, or fruits.
From the religious activities to the lively cultural dances, the Fiesta Señor and Sinulog Festivals are jolly and festive celebrations strongly ingrained in culture, faith, and tradition.
Parents should cherish the experience and teach their children to honor the Holy Child Jesus. – Rappler.com
