100% tackles won, 95% passing: Amorim must start 6/10 United star vs Brighton after good cameo - opinion
Manchester United ended a four-match winless streak in the Premier League with a 3-1 comeback triumph over Southampton on Thursday night.
The Saints dominated proceedings at Old Trafford and were the better side for 75 minutes. United were guilty of missing two clear-cut chances.
However, the Red Devils eventually came on top, with Amad Diallo scoring the maiden hat-trick of his career. There were several underwhelming displays, but the club can carry some positives.
Toby Collyer had a good cameo off the bench after replacing Manuel Ugarte in the 53rd minute.
Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo looked jaded in the opening half. Mainoo was replaced at the interval with Antony. Ugarte made way for Collyer, who caught the eye with his distribution.
The 21-year-old won 100 per cent of his tackles and completed 95 percent of his passes. Collyer also won three duels and provided some energy which was lacking in the heart of the midfield.
He received a 6/10 rating from Manchester Evening News for his performance against the Saints.
The midfielder must start in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion. Ugarte and Mainoo were far from their best against the Saints and could feature on the bench.
We won’t be surprised if Collyer and Bruno Fernandes are paired together in central midfield.
Collyer was linked with a potential loan exit earlier this month, but manager Ruben Amorim has changed his stance lately. He is prepared to keep the young midfielder for the rest of the season.
With Casemiro out-of-favour, the youngster has the opportunity to make a big impression such that the club are not tempted to invest in another marquee midfielder during the summer.
United have jumped to 12th in the standings after the late comeback win. They need a much better defensive display at the weekend if they want to beat the Seagulls at home.
