Sports Briefs: Redwood blanks Terra Linda in matchup of playoff contenders
Sarah Farese scored a pair of goals to lift Redwood to a 2-0 victory against Terra Linda in the lone matchup between top-five teams in the MCAL girls soccer standings on Thursday.
The Giants (7-2-3, 2-0-1 MCAL), who got an assist from Teagan McCormick, sit in a three-way tie for second place with Tam and Branson, while Terra Linda (5-3-3, 1-1-1) sits comfortably in fifth.
- Five different players found the back of the net as Tam secured a 5-0 win against Novato (0-8-0, 0-2-0) on Thursday. Marissa Scanlan and Allegra Andreaoli scored first-half goals for Tam (7-2-5, 2-0-1), assisted by Ava McMahon and Anna Feher, respectively. McMahon scored the third goal off an assist from Lila Campbell then set up the fourth goal, scored by Hana Leach. Campbell got her second assist of the game, setting up Lauren Willard for the final margin.
- Giselle Hernandez scored twice and Luna Diaz was involved in three goals as Branson rolled to a 6-0 victory against San Marin (2-6-0, 0-3-0) on Thursday. Diaz scored once and assisted both goals by Hernandez. Ally Hsieh had a goal and an assist for the Bulls (12-1-1, 2-0-1). Sophia Duran and Catrin Howell also scored while Sophie Arnal, Ava Grevelding, and Whitney Collet also had assists.
- Nora Snearly assisted on three goals as Marin Catholic (7-2-2, 3-0-0) retained its place atop the table with a 6-1 victory against San Rafael on Thursday. Snearly found Ava Korich for a 1-0 lead then Zoe Jenkins for a 2-0 lead. Lana Whilborg had the third goal for MC off an assist by Sloane Carey before Snearly set up Ellie Seymore for the fourth goal. Korich scored the fifth on an assist from Lillian Englert then Lucy Gonzalez capped the scoring with an Olimpico — scoring directly on a corner kick. Darby Fones scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs (9-4-0, 0-2-0).
- Blythe DeGooyer, Raya Leikin, and Kacy Walker all scored as Marin Academy (9-1-1, 4-0-0 BCL West) stayed unbeaten in league following a 3-0 victory against Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday. Leikin had the assist on the first goal in the 15th minute then scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute for a 2-0 lead.
Boys soccer
Marin Academy sustained its first league loss with a 1-0 defeat to Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday. The Wildcats (3-4-3, 3-1-0) opened league played with three consecutive wins.
Women’s basketball
Marin Catholic grad Gracyn Lovette scored seven points during Lehigh’s 80-54 Patriot League victory over Boston on Wednesday. She also had vie rebounds and five assists in 23 minutes of playing time for Lehigh (13-4, 4-1 league). The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to travel to Baltimore for Saturday’s game against Loyola-Maryland.
