‘Landman’ Holds Off Netflix and Amazon on Streaming Top 10 | Charts
What a difference a year makes. Max dominated the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report in the second half of 2024, thanks to hit series like “House of the Dragon,” “The Penguin,” and “Dune: Prophecy.” But since the calendar has turned to 2025, the chart has belonged to Paramount+ and “Landman.”
The drama, led by Billy Bob Thornton, has topped the chart two weeks in a row now. This week, the show rode the wave of its finale, which was made available on Jan. 12.
The series has been another feather in the cap of its creator, super writer/director/producer Taylor Sheridan, who has been behind most of the biggest hits on Paramount+, including “Tulsa King” and “Special Ops: Lioness.”
The stiffest competition for “Landman” comes in the form of another series set in the American west, “American Primeval,” from Netflix. The period miniseries is set in 1857, during the Utah War, which pitted Mormon Settlers against the U.S. government.
No. 3 is another Netflix smash, “Squid Game.” Where many Netflix TV series fade in the weeks after all of their episodes are released, “Squid Game” has proved to be the exception. Nearly three weeks into its availability, it’s still lodged near the top of the most-watched chart.
Next comes “Missing You.” The Netflix thriller is down one spot from last week. It’s followed by a fourth consecutive Netflix title, “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action.” The documentary looks at the late TV personality’s daytime talk show, which frequently featured fisticuffs and drama between the guests.
Amazon Prime Video puts two entries on the chart in the next two slots. Up first is “Beast Games,” the $100 million game show from the mind of YouTuber personality MrBeast. It’s followed by “On Call,” a new police procedural produced by Dick Wolf, the brains behind “Law & Order,” NBC’s multiple “Chicago” series, and the “FBI” franchise (more on some of those titles later).
Netflix holds down the final three titles on Samba’s most-watched list. Two of those are the latest foreign-language titles that Netflix has turned into U.S. hits. Up first is “The Breakthrough,” a Swedish crime drama miniseries that’s based on a true story. No. 10 is “Ad Vitam,” a French action thriller. Sandwiched in between at No. 9 is the Season 6 of the streamer’s popular drama “Virgin River.”
Switching over to linear, Dick Wolf re-enters the picture with a trio of his procedural creations holding the top three spots on the chart. “FBI: International” on CBS kicks things off, followed by “Chicago Med” and then “Chicago Fire,” both on NBC.
The rest of the early January chart is dominated by two game shows. “Wheel of Fortune” holds spots No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 10, while “The Price is Right” owns No. 7 through No. 9.
The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
