Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Will Pick Pro-Life AG Ashley Moody to Fill Marco Rubio’s Seat
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has decided on who to appoint as a successor to pro-life Senator Marco Rubio’s seat. Rubio has been nominated for Secretary of State in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration as is expected to be confirmed by the Senate.
DeSantis will name Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody for the interim appointment. Once she is named to Rubio’s seat, Moody would serve until a special election is held on November 3, 2026, to fill the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
Moody would be expected to be a leading contender to run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat and would likely retain it if elected in the primary as Florida is a strongly conservative state now.

Moody is solidly pro-life and has consistently fought for laws to protect babies from abortion.
“I am pro-life, unabashedly so. I have been clear and open with Florida’s voters about where I stand on abortion, and I am honored to have received their support—by a large margin—in two statewide elections,” she said in a statement last year opposing a radical pro-abortion amendment.
Other potential candidates for the appointment included Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, former Speaker of the Florida House José Oliva, and Governor DeSantis’s Chief of Staff James Uthmeier.
