01/16/2025: Mainly Cloudy, Cold, Few Flakes Thursday
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologists Matt Mackie and Kevin Appleby:
Another chilly day is ahead with mostly cloudy skies and below normal temperatures, but the mercury will be climbing into this weekend behind a warm front which will move through later Thursday. An arctic blast, however, is looming and looks to filter into our region by Monday, with several days of high temperatures in the teens, wind chills in the single digits.
The daytime hours of Thursday will be predominantly dry with a few flakes and flurries possible around sunset out west. High temperatures remain chilly in the 20s for most, but today will feature much less wind comparatively to the past two days.
Up to the northwest, some areas may pick up over an inch of snow, but most of us won't achieve that amount as this front battles some dry air in place. Snow will taper regionwide after midnight.
Temperatures will drop into the teens to near 20 degrees by Friday morning with light winds.
Friday is a rather nice mid January day! Temperatures will climb slightly above normal with a fair bit of sunshine and light winds. Soak it up - it's the nicest weather day for the next week plus.
Saturday, while mild, is unsettled with a scattering of rain and snow showers. Mostly rain is favored for the valleys, though there may be some flakes mixing in during the morning. Higher elevations may see an inch or two of snow accumulation Saturday. It's far from a washout of a day and will feature windows of dry time, especially in the morning. High temperatures will be in the 30s to near 40 degrees. Temperatures trend colder on Sunday, where it will be a struggle for Albany to get back to freezing despite starting off in the mid 20s Sunday morning. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy as a weak coastal low is favored to stay away from the region, but there may be a few snow showers in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Southern Berkshire County Sunday night.
We then rip the floor out from underneath the temperatures for next week, with the wind picking up in the process. It's a struggle to break 20 degrees on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and trend even colder on Tuesday. Wind chill values will be in the single digits by day, below zero by night Monday and Tuesday. The winds relax a bit overnight into Wednesday, but that opens the door for a subzero start for many come Wednesday morning. High temperature only rebound into the mid and upper teens by Wednesday afternoon.
