'Little of substance': Senate Republicans ripped by WSJ for giving Hegseth 'a pass'
The Wall Street Editorial Board came away from watching the Senate interrogation of Fox News personality Pete Hegseth to be Donald Trump's next secretary of defense unsatisfied and left with the hope that the embattled nominee will surprise them.
In an editorial published after Hegseth's contentious hearing that lasted over 4 hours, the editors praised Sen, Tim Kaine (D-VA) for his incisive questioning about Hegseth's documented history of alcohol abuse and treatment of women while calling out Republicans for not doing their jobs.
As they wrote, "Republicans didn’t do much scrutinizing. Markwayne Mullin (R., Okla.) noted that Senators sometimes show up drunk for votes at night and cheat on their wives, but they aren’t in the chain of command of U.S. military forces. Tim Sheehy (R., Mont.), after opening his remarks by asking how many genders there are, did ask about Navy shipbuilding, to which Mr. Hegseth basically said Donald Trump wants to build ships. No details."

The editors went on to note that, even when Republican senators did press Hegseth, he was evasive and "vague" and failed to press him to give more detailed answers.
"Mr. Hegseth made noises about restoring U.S. military deterrence, and that’s something. But it appears we’re on track to have a secretary of Defense whose real views are a mystery," the editors lamented before writing, "Let’s hope he rises to the occasion."
