2025 BAFTA Awards nominations: ‘Conclave,’ ‘Emilia Perez’ lead the way
On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees. Expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez were nominated for Best Film. See the complete list of nominees below.
Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.
In second, just behind the nominations leader, was Emilia Pérez. Netflix’s top contender landed 11 BAFTA Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascon, and Best Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana.
Other notable nomination totals included The Brutalist with nine, Anora with seven (plus a Rising Star nomination for star Mikey Madison), Dune: Part Two with seven, Wicked with seven, A Complete Unknown with six, Kneecap with six (a BAFTA Awards record for a debut feature), and The Substance with five.
Notable snubs on Wednesday included Denzel Washington for Gladiator II (the acclaimed two-time Oscar winner has never been nominated for a BAFTA Award), Daniel Craig for Queer, and Margaret Qualley for The Substance.
The nominations announcement came as Hollywood is reeling over the destructive and deadly Los Angeles wildfires that have left thousands without homes, including such prominent Hollywood figures as Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Adam Brody, Anna Faris, Mel Gibson, and Miles Teller. Due to the wildfires, the awards season calendar has also been impacted. Several events and nomination announcements — including the Producers Guild Awards and Writers Guild Awards nominations, both of which are delayed — have been postponed or canceled outright. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has also adjusted its plans for the 97th annual Oscars, delaying the 2025 Oscar nominations announcement to Jan. 23 and extending Oscars nomination voting until this Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
The 2025 BAFTA Awards take place on Feb. 16. Before the nominations announcement on Wednesday, BAFTA announced its nominees for the Rising Star Award, which is voted on by the public. This year’s contenders include Marisa Abela (Back to Black), Jharrel Jerome (Unstoppable), David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Nabhaan Rizwan (In Camera).

The BAFTA Awards organizers have frequently tinkered with their voting rules over the last few years, but the process was streamlined this year with a de-emphasis on jury selections. For Best Film longlist contenders – of which six of the 10 movies will receive final 2025 BAFTA nominations depending on the Round Two vote totals – the entire BAFTA membership voted for their favorites. For acting nominees, the top seven contenders in each corresponding category, as voted by the Acting Chapter, are on the longlist. A jury selects the final three contenders from the actors and actresses ranked eight through 13. Directing nominees are chosen with parity: five men and five women make the longlist without jury input. If a filmmaker who identifies as non-binary is selected or if a male-female directing duo earns a position on the longlist, an extra slot is added to accommodate.
The nominations are decided by Chapter voting and no longer include jury selections.
