Spurs legend warns Postecoglou against signing ‘bang average’ player
Spurs legend Chris Waddle has sent a message to Ange Postecoglou amidst claims that the Lilywhites are interested in offering Marcus Rashford an exit route out of Man United.
Marcus Rashford: The extremely talented enigma
Rashford is one of the most polarising players in the Premier League. Some still believe that he can be world-class on his day, while others consider him nothing more than bang average. It has to be said that an increasing number of fans and pundits are now moving to the latter camp.
That polarising view is very much in line with the type of player Rashford is. The Man United man has games, and even sometimes whole seasons, where he is unplayable, but he can also be a complete passenger on other occasions.
It seems like the 27-year-old does not have a future at Old Trafford under new boss Ruben Amorim and the forward is now thought to be in talks with Juventus and AC Milan regarding a loan switch.
However, reports over recent days continue to suggest that Spurs are still very much in the race for the England international and are themselves exploring a loan move for him.
Chris Waddle reacts to Marcus Rashford to Spurs links
Waddle is not convinced that Rashford would be an astute signing for Ange Postecoglou‘s side.
While he conceded that Tottenham would have a great option on their hands if they can get him motivated, he pointed out that Rashford’s output has been consistently falling and described the forward as “bang average”.
The former Spurs man told The Daily Mirror: “There’s a lot of mind games going on with Marcus Rashford. I think there are a lot of doubts about his desire, his passion and his ambition. If he went to Tottenham and the fans were singing his name, would he be happy with that and think, ‘That’s it, I’ve arrived, I don’t need to do that anymore.’
“Whoever gets him, they’re going to get a player for six months. After that, can he keep that appetite and hunger to go on? Can he prove to everybody he should be playing left wing for England? To do that, he needs to be playing week-in, week-out for his club side.
“What is he doing at the minute? They said he was ill for the Liverpool game, not in the squad. No disrespect, but he’s not young anymore. People keep talking as if he was 21. He’s not. He’s had an in-and-out career. He had that season where he scored loads of goals, but that’s becoming a distant memory. He’s been bang average since.”
Waddle likens Rashford to former Tottenham star
The 64-year-old likened Rashford’s career trajectory to that of former Spurs man Dele Alli and suggested that he could be the latest in a long line of players to have a bright start to their careers before falling away.
Waddle added about the Man Utd man: “We all know he’s got ability, but we’ve seen this story with so many players before. Players like Dele Alli, Ross Barkley, they come on the scene, burn brightly and then disappear.
“Both of those players were talked about as world-beaters when they were younger, and they couldn’t do it over the course of their careers. There are so many players who were tipped to become the next big thing, and it didn’t happen for them. The only person that can change it is Marcus.”
