Manchester United return to Old Trafford with a skip in their step after a thoroughly successful week.

The Red Devils delivered what was perhaps their performance of the season against Liverpool in a 2-2 draw at Anfield before dumping Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

Ruben Amorim’s work seems to be taking effect with United looking more structured and resilient in defence, along with a greater ruthlessness in attack.

But supporters will hope this isn’t yet another false dawn.

In recent years, United have often reserved their best displays for the biggest fixtures and come a cropper in more winnable games.

A home tie against Southampton certainly represents a winnable game, and moreover is an ideal opportunity to make a statement to their rivals.

United are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games against Southampton, while Saints are winless in their last 17 top-flight away games.

As for visiting Southampton, it’s all looking pretty bleak.

Ivan Juric’s side are rock-bottom of the division with just six points and one victory all season, and some bookmakers have them at 1/500 to be relegated.

There are some crumbs of comfort, however, with Southampton beating Swansea 3-0 in the FA Cup over the weekend, with many of their fans deeming it their best performance all year.

They’ve also lost just three of their last 10 visits to Old Trafford in the Premier league.

Brilliant Bruno

Bruno Fernandes might just be returning to his brilliant best under Ruben Amorim, and that’s bad news for struggling Southampton.

The Portuguese midfielder, 30, has scored five goals and provided four assists since Amorim’s arrival with an xG comfortably higher than any of his colleagues over the last six Premier League matches (2.07).

Only Amad Diallo can better Bruno’s 15 efforts on goal in the last six, but nobody in the squad beats his seven shots on target or 16 chances created.

Fernandes should fill his boots with a goal and assist in Thursday’s clash against a side who’ve shipped 106 shots in the last six games with the highest xGC in the division (13.90).

Clean sheet

It’s been a real struggle for Southampton on the road this season. As mentioned, they are winless in their last 17 top-flight away games – securing two points from a possible 30.

Goals have also been an issue, especially away from St Mary’s. Just five of their 12 Premier League goals have been scored away from home – blanking in four of their last six. Nobody has a lower xG away (8.00) or minutes per expected goal (122.3).
