South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol Arrested
International media reports have stated that Yoon Suk-yeol, the President of South Korea, who had previously been suspended from his position due to declaring martial law, has been arrested.
According to the Associated Press, Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested on Wednesday, January 15 in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and is facing charges of rebellion for declaring martial law in December.
Yonhap News Agency, which was the first to report the president’s arrest, stated that the arrest warrant for him had been issued after his failure to attend the impeachment hearing on December 31.
Reports also indicate that around 3,200 military personnel were dispatched to his property on a hillside in Seoul to arrest Yoon Suk-yeol, where he had been hiding for weeks.
In December of the previous year, Yoon Suk-yeol used his presidential powers to unexpectedly declare martial law in South Korea, a decision that quickly faced strong opposition.
Although he revoked the martial law within less than 24 hours, the protests did not subside, leading to widespread public demonstrations calling for the president’s resignation. He was later impeached in the National Assembly and removed from office.
The arrest of Yoon Suk-yeol marks a significant political crisis in South Korea. The actions surrounding the martial law declaration and subsequent public unrest have deepened divisions within the country.
The situation now calls into question the future stability of South Korea’s political system, and the ongoing developments will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.
