Lafayette mother and daughter need help after escaping fire
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) --A Lafayette family is left picking up the pieces as they're forced to start over after a fire burned down their home on Jeanette Street.
Eva Rubin and her daughter Jennifer Veronie were in the house when Rubin began to smell smoke. When her mother searched for the source of the smoke, Veronie says she heard a pop and saw the fire begin to spread throughout the house as they ran to get outside. Jennifer Veronie said "I went back inside, grabbed the fire extinguisher, squirted it at the door, did nothing, and we had to come outside and burrow our way under the fence because it was so hot we couldn't get through the gates."
After firefighters spent hours extinguishing the flames, Veronie says her family has seen the inside of the house and realized almost everything is gone, "Luckily, we were able to get some of the pictures from our childhood and my mom's mom's pictures and stuff like that, but that's about it. And most of them are either singed or water damaged."
As the family is left devastated following the fire, Veronie's sister Michelle Douete asks anyone for assistance as her mother and sister are now forced to begin again, "We have a family friend that owns a daycare in Lafayette, The Learning Tree daycare. And she's happy to help take donations and go through them: size 16-18 pants and large to extra-large shirts for both my mom and my sister. Anything Helps.
