Moore newlyweds Home Depot gift card wiped out by scammer
MOORE, Okla. (KFOR) - A newlywed couple in Moore was about to start a home project last fall, but when they went to get supplies with a gift card given to them as a wedding present, the money was all gone.
"Two people lose out whenever something like happens, a person who bought the card for their family member or whoever to give a gift, and then the person who received the gift,” Elizabeth Daniels said sitting next to her husband Spencer.
It’s a double whammy as the Daniels’s would call it. They were married last September. They ended up with a couple of Home Depot gift cards as gifts from family members.
"We remodel all the time, so we were trying to get stuff to do that,” Elizabeth said.
However, when they went to check out, the card was empty.
"They said that it was bought September 13th. It was emptied on September 14th,” Spencer said.
“Day of the wedding,” Elizabeth said.
Without their knowledge, someone had spent the gift card and the transaction history showed some interesting activity.
"One of the items was a tool box headed to Pennsylvania,” Spencer said.
"We don't know anybody from anywhere like that,” Elizabeth said.
Store employees told them there was nothing they could do and encouraged them to file a police report. The couple were left to pay $200 out of their pocket and claimed it was nothing new to the employees.
"They're like, 'oh, yeah, that's happening constantly,’” Elizabeth said.
KFOR got in touch with Home Depot’s media relations team who did confirm it has been a problem for them and a lot of other stores, too. Right now, they’re sending the incident over to their gift card fraud team to see if there’s anything they can do for them. In the meantime, the Daniels’s say they just want to get the word out.
"We just don't want it to happen to other people,” Elizabeth said.
A couple weeks later, the couple said they went to use their other gift card they got and luckily that one worked just fine. It’s not clear exactly how the fraud on the other card actually took place.
