Kansas Abortions Jump 58%, With Almost 20,000 Babies Killed in 2023
Last year, Senior Vice President Emeritus of Operation Rescue, Cheryl Sullenger, predicted an astronomical increase in Kansas abortions from the year 2016 – when abortions in the state were at a historic low – to the end of 2024, just two years after abortion was enshrined in the state constitution.
This prediction was based on an estimate for Kansas abortion numbers from the Guttmacher Institute, as annual abortion statistics from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) were not yet available. At the time, Sullenger suspected Kansas authorities were withholding the numbers because they knew how shocking such a huge rise in abortions would be to the public.
Sullenger was right – those 2023 numbers have finally been released and they are, indeed, shocking. Many of the statistics are even worse than Operation Rescue could have imagined.
According to the 2023 Annual Summary of Vital Statistics from KDHE, 19,467 abortions were committed in the state during 2023. That is a huge 58% increase from 2022, when 12,319 abortions were committed.

Of those 19,467 abortions, a whopping 70% were chemical abortions (13,033). That represents another huge increase of 78% in chemical abortions from the previous year (7,343).
“Kansas abortion numbers are not just on the rise,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, “they are through the roof! We are seeing a cataclysmic increase in the number of children murdered by the ‘Sunflower State’ and there is no sign of this horrific expansion stopping or slowing. Kansas has become the bloody abortion hub of the Midwest.”
These large increases can be credited to the amount of women being funneled into Kansas from surrounding states. The KDHE report confirms 78% of abortions in 2023 were performed on non-residents.
“If this trend continued into 2024,” Newman added, “and the 58% increase we saw in 2023 held steady without further growth, Kansas could be responsible for over 30,800 abortions in 2024.”
This prediction is very likely to come true – and could be even more – as Kansas saw a 57% increase in abortions from 2021 to 2022, followed by the 58% increase from 2022 to 2023.
If the pattern reflected in the KDHE annual abortion numbers holds steady, as Newman predicts, that will mean a staggering 350% increase in abortions since 2016, just eight years ago, when abortions were at an all-time low.
“Elections have consequences,” added Newman. “The ‘Value Them Both’ amendment was our last chance to stop this explosion in abortion deaths, and even some pro-life voters chose to vote against it. ‘Bleeding Kansas’ is reaping what the voters sowed, and preborn children are paying the price of that tragic election with their innocent lives.”
