How do you get one of the new distinctive Kansas license plates?
TOPEKA (KSNT) - People looking to get their hands on one of the new distinctive license plates in Kansas can do so, but may encounter some hiccups along the way.
27 News reached out to Shawnee County Treasurer Larry Mah for more information on how people can find one of the eight new distinctive license plates. He said each of the new plates are technically available, but exact delivery dates for each won't be known until someone places an order down for one.
"After the first plate is ordered and printed, subsequent plates generally deliver within two weeks," Mah said. "Until that first plate is processed we are in the dark."
Mah told 27 News no one has ordered any of the plates yet. He ran a test for one of the new license plates on Monday, Jan. 13 and found the process to order it worked. However, he explained that people looking to get one of the new plates will only be able to get ones with random numbers as the personalized options are currently unavailable.
People are encouraged to reach out to their local county treasurer's office to try ordering one of the new plates. Each plate, such as the new Kansas City Chiefs plate, will have a specialty royalty plate fee along with a royalty fee.
The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) keeps a list on its website of the different license plate and vanity options people can order. As of Jan. 13, this list does not include the most recently approved distinctive license plate designs.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed off on Senate Bill 359 in 2024 allowing for the production of multiple new distinctive license plates. The new plates were to be made available to the public on or after Jan. 1, 2025. These new designs include the following:
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Sporting Kansas City
- Sedgwick County Zoo
- Kansas City Royals
- Kansas City Current
- Topeka Zoo
- Support the Troops
- First City of Kansas
Kansans could already choose from a multitude of different distinctive license plates depending on their preferences. Options to choose from include recognition of military service, higher education, Kansas wildlife and other niche interest plates.
