Arsenal vs Tottenham preview
Arch-rivals Arsenal and Tottenham do battle in the 211th north London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
And it’s actually Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal who enter the encounter in desperate in need of a morale-boosting victory to get their season back on track.
The Gunners have endured a miserable run of three matches without a win.
They crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday against 10-man Manchester United, while their Carabao Cup hopes are hanging by a thread following a 2-0 semi-final loss to Newcastle in the first leg.
Before that they failed to close the gap on Liverpool when drawing 1-1 with Brighton, which leaves them trailing the league leaders by six points having played a game more.
To make matters worse, Gabriel Jesus has joined Bukayo Saka, Ben White, Ethan Nwaneri and Riccardo Calafiori on the sidelines with suspected ACL rupture.
But their history in this contest could provide some optimism.
Arsenal have won six of their last eight Premier League games against Spurs (D1 L1) and are looking to win three consecutive league games against them for the first time since January 1989.
The Gunners are also unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League home games (W9 D3), and are the only side without a home loss so far this season (W6 D3).
They’ve kept a clean sheet in each of their last four home league games, and that’s good news when facing a Tottenham side who’ve won just one of their last 31 top-flight away games against Arsenal (D12 L18).
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham followed their impressive Carabao Cup win over Liverpool with a lacklustre FA Cup win over Tamworth, although it took them until extra-time to see off their non-league opponents.
Spurs remain the most consistently inconsistent of sides but do now have the opportunity to secure three straight wins for the first time since early October.
And maximum points are needed if they are to break into the top half of the table with the club currently stranded in 12th position, 10 points off the European places.

It’s still early days in his career but it’s quite evident that Lucas Bergvall has the stomach for a fight and should relish this encounter. In addition to his technical qualities, Bergvall has physicality, tenacity and aggression in abundance.
The 18-year-old has committed eight fouls in the league this season in just 349 minutes of competitive action, and has collected five yellow cards in 754 minutes in all competitions. A big occasion such as this should see him entered into the referee’s notebook.
