Player grades: Warriors vs. Raptors
Assessing every Golden State player’s performance from the team’s 104-101 loss to Toronto.
The Golden State Warriors lost a heartbreaker on Monday night, losing 104-101 to the Toronto Raptors after their former player, Chris Boucher, dropped 17 fourth-quarter points to help Toronto finish off a comeback.
Another painful loss.
Now let’s grade the players, and we’ll make it quick tonight. As always, grades are based on my expectations for each player, with a “B” grade representing the average performance for that player.
Note: True-shooting percentage (TS) is a scoring efficiency metric. Entering Monday’s games, league-average TS was 57.4%.
Buddy Hield
33 minutes, 8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 3-for-13 shooting, 2-for-10 threes, 30.8% TS, +6
All right, I’ll say it: this whole “Buddy Hield can play defense but not shoot” thing is really, really throwing me for a loop. What is going on? I’m so confused!
A really good defensive game for Buddy. A really bad offensive game. That might be encouraging going forward, but he’s here to score, and he’s really struggling with it.
Grade: C
Post-game bonus: Tied for the best plus/minus on the team.
Andrew Wiggins
35 minutes, 20 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers, 2 fouls, 6-for-13 shooting, 4-for-9 threes, 4-for-6 free throws, 63.9% TS, +4
Wiggins returned to the court after two games missed due to personal reasons. And while he couldn’t notch his first win on his home Canadian soil, he was pretty clearly one of the best Warriors all night, with very good offense and solid defense.
Grade: A-
Trayce Jackson-Davis
30 minutes, 3 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 1-for-4 shooting, 1-for-4 free throws, 26.0% TS, +6
It’s fun seeing TJD get a chance to play genuine starters minutes. Unfortunately, he didn’t have it in this game. He couldn’t create separation, had as many turnovers as points, and struggled on defense.
Grade: C-
Post-game bonus: Tied for the best plus/minus on the team.
Dennis Schröder
24 minutes, 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 5-for-12 shooting, 2-for-6 threes, 50.0% TS, +6
A fairly mediocre game from Schröder. Nothing special on offense, but he did run the ship fairly well, and his defense was decent. Still waiting for things to click. It’s hard with midseason additions.
Grade: B-
Post-game bonus: Tied for the best plus/minus on the team.
Steph Curry
35 minutes, 26 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers, 2 fouls, 9-for-17 shooting, 4-for-10 threes, 4-for-4 free throws, 69.3% TS, 0 +/-
There are a lot of reasons why the Warriors lost, but Curry having 26, seven, and seven certainly isn’t one of them. The turnovers have really been an issue lately but, not to excuse Curry, they feel more the result of him having to shoulder too big of a load than anything else.
A very solid game for the chef. Bummer it couldn’t be rewarded with a win.
Grade: A-
Post-game bonus: Led the team in points and assists.
Kevon Looney
18 minutes, 10 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 fouls, 5-for-9 shooting, 55.6% TS, -8
An absolute beast on the glass. Looney’s now up to 225 rebounds in just 517 minutes. Absurd! He comfortably leads the NBA in rebounds per 36 minutes and per 100 possessions, and is third (behind just Andre Drummond and Karl-Anthony Towns) in total rebounding percentage.
Grade: A-
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in rebounds.
Lindy Waters III
22 minutes, 8 points, 9 rebounds, 1 block, 1 turnover, 2-for-6 shooting, 2-for-4 threes, 2-for-3 free throws, 54.6% TS, -9
It’s been fun watching Waters find ways to help the team win that aren’t just scoring. He was all over the glass in this game, which was awesome. Just a solid all-around game for Waters.
Grade: B+
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in rebounds.
Moses Moody
14 minutes, 1 point, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, 0-for-6 shooting, 0-for-3 threes, 1-for-2 free throws, 7.3% TS, -10
Not easy to positively impact a game when you shoot 0-for-6 from the field, and Moody didn’t do enough in other areas to make up for that.
Grade: D+
Post-game bonus: Worst plus/minus on the team.
Gui Santos
12 minutes, 0 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 fouls, 0-for-3 shooting, 0-for-2 threes, 0.0% TS, -9
The Gui magic hit a bit of a bump in the road in this game, though I was still impressed with his defense and overall comfort on the floor, even if he still looks a little skittish.
Grade: C+
Kyle Anderson
18 minutes, 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 foul, 4-for-5 shooting, 2-for-2 threes, 3-for-3 free throws, 102.8% TS, -1
Anderson can’t quite make you forget that Draymond Green isn’t on the court, but he certainly did a lot to ease the pain. A fantastic game for Slo Mo.
Grade: A
Monday’s DNPs: Pat Spencer
Monday’s inactives: Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Gary Payton II, Brandin Podziemski, Quinten Post
