Sheriff's office rescues 4 dogs left on Kansas Turnpike
LYON COUNTY (KSNT) - Law enforcement in Lyon County are looking for permanent homes for four dogs found on the Kansas Turnpike.
Lyon County Dispatch received a call just after 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13 that four dogs were found at a service center on the Kansas Turnpike. Two dogs were left in a cage by the dumpsters and two of the dogs were running loose, according to a social media post from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
Lyon County Animal Control Officer Felipe Perez told 27 News he picked up the dogs and was surprised by the discovery.
"I've been doing this a while, but it still makes me sad that people are doing this stuff, especially in this weather," Perez said.
A person from out of state tried to take the dogs to an animal shelter, but there was no room, according to the social media post.
"We've had several phone calls today since we've put this post on Facebook and it just kind of shows how great our community is that everyone wants to jump in and help us and have animals that need help," Detention Captain Zach Shafer said.
Right now, the four dogs are being cared for by jail staff, and exercising with the emotional support dog, justice. Perez said people interested in fostering or adopting the dogs can call the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
