Premier League announce new date for last ever Everton vs Liverpool clash at Goodison Park but risk huge clash
THE PREMIER LEAGUE have announced the new date for the last ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Everton‘s clash with Liverpool was originally scheduled to be played on December 7, 2024.
But the clash was postponed due to poor weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh.
The new date of the clash will be Wednesday February 12.
TNT Sports will have the rights to the fixture, which will be played at 7.30pm.
A statement from the Premier League on the new date of the game said: “Following consultations between the clubs and the Premier League, a new date was agreed upon.”
Yet there is a risk the historic match could be postponed AGAIN.
That is because it is relying on Liverpool not featuring in the Champions League knockout phase play-off round, which will be played during that week.
Teams that finish between 9th and 24th in the new-look 36-team Champions League league table will face off against each other for a place in the knockout phase.
Arne Slot‘s Reds currently top the Champions League table with six wins from six and sit six points above the play-off round spots.
They are virtually certain to qualify for the next phase, but are yet to mathematically do so,
Therefore, this means the clash with Everton at Goodison may be forced to be rearranged for a second time, though this risk should only be theoretical given Liverpool’s imperious form in Europe so far.
They face Lille and PSV in their final two league fixtures.
TNT, having the rights to broadcast the rearranged Merseyside derby, face a headache given how they will also be showing the Champions League play-off ties that day as well.
Since the original fixture, Everton have sacked manager Sean Dyche and replaced him with David Moyes.
The Scot, 61, previously managed the Toffees for 11 years between 2002 and 2013 before he left for an ill-fated spell in taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Moyes has since managed Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham across two stints, leaving the Hammers for the second time over the summer after delivering them a first trophy in 43 years the season prior.
He has managed 42 games against Liverpool during his career, but has only won six times.
Everton won the Goodison clash against Liverpool last season, but before that had not won at home against their local rivals since 2010.
