SWAT responds to north Austin apartment after report of sexual assault
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Police and a SWAT team responded to a north Austin apartment complex Monday morning after a reported aggravated sexual assault.
The Austin Police Department said shortly after 4 a.m. officers were on the scene of a "barricaded subject" at an apartment in the 10000 block of North Lamar Boulevard. That area is just north of Rundberg Lane.
Corporal Matthew Nonweiler, a public information officer with APD, said APD responded to the apartment complex after receiving a 911 call from a security guard shortly after midnight.
According to Nonweiler, the security guard told police he was doing patrols and came across a woman who reported she had been sexually assaulted at gunpoint.
Police responded to the scene, spoke with the woman, and were able to identify a suspect vehicle, name, and apartment unit. Detectives were also able to file search and arrest warrants.
Nonweiler said APD officers attempted callouts at the suspect apartment unit about an hour and a half after the initial call and did not receive a response.
Police determined SWAT was needed on the scene because of the gun the woman reported was used. APD SWAT was not available, so TCSO SWAT responded.
Six people ultimately exited the apartment and were peacefully detained. APD is working to determine if one of those six was the suspect.
Nonweiler said it's "possible that we have our suspect, it's possible that we don't," and asked anyone with information to report it to 311 or APD's tip line at 512-472-8477.
