PATH train fares increase by 25 cents, first hike since 2014
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- After a week of the first city’s congestion pricing, the turn to pay more to come into NYC is now for those commuting on the PATH Train.
As commuters entered the PATH station in Hoboken Sunday afternoon, they were welcomed by a sign indicating that effective today, they will have to pay more to ride the train.
“I don’t like it, but it’s inflation, whatever is going on. We just going to have deal with,” said Patrick Taaff.
Inflation indeed, the Port Authority stated is one of the reasons for the fare hikes.
A one-way trip is up 25 cents, making the new price $3.
A 10-trip SmartLink will cost riders $28.50, which is $2.50 more and a 30-day pass is now $120.75 which is an additional $10.50. This is the first time prices have increased for PATH riders since 2014.
“The problem isn’t the fact that is going up since 2014, it is that everything is going up when does it stop," said Bryan Bourne.
“As long as they improve with that money it should be fine," added Guillermo Escamilla.
According to the Port Authority, this will make up for the 3 billion dollars lost during the pandemic and improve services.
“I am not the happiest with the service, but I understand the maintenance and everything cost a lot. The only thing I find weird is we get a price increase first and then the maintenance afterward, so it seems you are paying and not even getting the service,” said Alex Binasca.
Seniors will still receive a discounted fare, which is also increased by 25 cents. The new price is $1.50.
“I’m disabled, and PATH has never had a disabled fare, I don’t think that is changing. Where NJ transit does, MTA does, what about you PATH?” asked Jack Silbert.
To answer Jack’s question, PATH said that for the first time, and beginning this summer, commuters with disabilities will be eligible for a 50 percent fare discount.
This is not the only transit system going up this year. The MTA is expected to increase New York City subway fares this summer. The cost of a single ride will go up from $2.90 to $3.00.
