Fatal ice rescue on Great Sacandaga Lake prompts ice safety reminder
MAYFIELD, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Fulton County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police are investigating after two people fell through the ice of the Great Sacandaga Lake on Sunday morning. One of the people rushed to St. Mary's emergency room has died after being pulled out of the frigid waters, officials said.
Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino said the people fell through the ice between Sunset Bay and Cranberry Creek. Two fishermen pulled two people out of the lake after the side-by-side accident.
Giardino and Fulton County Emergency Management are urging residents and locals to avoid stepping out on the ice due to the unpredictability of ice thickness. In a Facebook post on Friday, the county's emergency management said that ice quality and thickness can vary across the lake, causing unsafe conditions.
"Pressure ridges, both open and closed can pop up overnight," the post said. "Water levels change as the regulating district does what it needs to do to keep levels where they need to be."
