Ange Postecoglou could face FA fine for post-match comments – Expert says
Ange Postecoglou may be fined by the FA for comments he made after Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United in their first match of the current calendar year.
Tottenham v Newcastle: a Premier League match marred by controversy
Tottenham were defeated by Newcastle in their most recent Premier League fixture. Although Spurs put in a decent performance, despite having a first-team squad laden with injuries and illnesses, they were unable to find an equaliser which means they are 12th in the Premier League table.
However, there were some controversial refereeing decisions during the match, with Newcastle’s first goal becoming a point of debate. Although Lucas Bergvall struck the ball onto Joelinton’s hand, Anthony Gordon’s goal was awarded because Joelinton’s arm was in a natural position and the handball was accidental.
Later in the game, there were calls for Dan Burn to be sent off, but he managed to avoid a second yellow card after a handball which stopped a promising Spurs counter-attack.
Ange Postecoglou could be fined after criticising the refereeing decisions in Tottenham’s defeat
Spurs manager, Ange Postecoglou, did not hold back in his post-match press conference. He made the claim that his side would have won the game on a different day on an ‘even and fair’ playing ground.
He also declared that he was as angry as he had ever been in his career that Spurs were denied the reward their performance deserved.
According to football finance expert, Dan Plumely, Postecoglou could be fined for these comments. Speaking to Tottenham News, he was asked whether fines are more likely than bans and if the football authorities are seeking to create a deterrent.
Plumely said: “I would say so. You’re looking at past cases and similar comparisons.
“We know they are clamping down on this more and more lately to make it more of a deterrent, but it’s unlikely that ever stops it, players and managers will always say things in the heat of the moment.
“I think, as it stands, fines are more likely these days as the natural consequence of that.”
Referee controversy has continued to follow Spurs
While Tottenham felt hard done by in their loss to Newcastle, days later they recorded a Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool and it was the visitors who had complaints when Bergvall scored the winning goal after avoiding a second yellow card for a poorly timed challenge.
Reds manager, Arne Slot, acknowledged the decisions which went against Tottenham in the Newcastle game, but he felt they had a key decision go in their favour against his side.
With a number of controversial decisions being made, perhaps the FA should give less attention to dishing out fines and more to improving the standards of refereeing in the English game.
