Postecoglou reveals whether Timo Werner could leave Spurs in January
Ange Postecoglou speaks on the possibility of Timo Werner’s Spurs loan spell being cut short and on the impact that the German can have on his side.
Timo Werner has had a loan spell to forget at Spurs
While Werner has had a few decent moments over the course of his 12-month loan spell at Tottenham so far, on the whole, his performances have not been up to scratch.
The German international looks a player devoid of confidence and it has been reported by a few outlets over recent weeks that the 28-year-old’s loan spell could be cut short this month.
It has been suggested that Werner could return to RB Leipzig and potentially go out on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt for the remainder of the season.
Ange Postecoglou reacts to rumours about Werner’s future
Other journalists have rubbished the speculation over Werner’s future, claiming that the forward will see out his loan contract with Spurs until the end of the season.
Postecoglou himself has now confirmed that the German international is heading nowhere, admitting that he cannot afford to lose any more players.
When asked if he expects Werner to still be at Spurs at the end of this transfer window, the Australian told Football.London: “Yeah. The last thing I want is to lose another player at the moment.
“The other night after Rodrigo went off, we had 11 first-team players out. We’re not letting anyone go at this point.”
Postecoglou addresses his previous criticism of Werner
After Tottenham’s 1-1 draw away at Rangers last month, a game where Werner was withdrawn at half-time, the Spurs head coach publicly criticised the winger, remarking that his performance “was not acceptable.”
That was very out of character for Postecoglou, who tends always publicly come out in support of his players, but the 59-year-old has now insisted that his words were mere feedback for Werner.
The Aussie coach clarified that there has never been an issue with the former Chelsea man’s attitude at Hotspur Way.
When asked about his criticism of Werner last month, Postecoglou said: “It was feedback, it was what I obviously felt that day. I think he’s made an impact, even at the weekend when he came on, he’s got certain attributes that can hurt any team. You saw that at the weekend, he’s got a real turn of pace. We’ve needed that in games at times, particularly late in games.
“His attitude has never been a problem in terms of the way he trains, or the way he’s going about things. I felt that day, particularly with the situation we were in and him being a senior player, I thought he could have contributed more, but since then he’s made an impact as we’ve wanted to. There’s certainly never been any problems with his attitude.”
