Andie MacDowell Has a Pointed Message for Hollywood: ‘Don’t Do Cliché Older People'
Andie MacDowell isn’t afraid to tell it like it is, especially to those in Hollywood who aren’t getting with the program. Recently, The Way Home star revealed she’s tired of seeing this cliche in Hollywood, and we couldn’t agree more.
In a recent interview with Glamour, MacDowell talked about something that frustrates her: the lack of smart, leading, mature women.
“Don’t do cliché older people,” she said. “That’s all I really care about. There are a lot of older women down here [in South Carolina], and they’re doing fantastic things with their lives. They’re making things happen. They have so much wisdom and knowledge. They’re mentoring younger people. They’re very vital and interesting.”
She added, “People are not interested in mature people, sadly. I do think that there is the opportunity for interesting characters out there. They’re just not writing them.”
While Hollywood has been slowly trying to rectify this, MacDowell is right, a lot needs to change. Mature women are cool, they’re wise and have so much life in them. Plus, we need more movies with older moms or grandmas on screen too! However, we should mention that many movies starring mature women have been hitting the awards season, like The Last Showgirl, Maria, and Babygirl, to name a few.
And this isn’t the first time MacDowell has called out the fear of aging as a society, and in Hollywood. In a previous interview with SheKnows, MacDowell talked about how people shouldn’t fear aging, and embrace it.
“I think there’s such a fear of age that particularly for women, not so much for men. I want people to contemplate that age is something to be admired and revered and not shamed, there shouldn’t be any shame to it, and we are beautiful as we get older,” she said. “That’s what I think.”
