CWI announces schedule for 2025 Headley Weekes Trophy
First-innings points in drawn matches will return for this year’s edition of the West Indies Championship.
The tournament, featuring eight teams competing for the prestigious Headley Weekes Trophy and a winner’s prize of US$250,000, will also see the use of Kookaburra balls in two rounds and at least one pink-ball day/night fixture. The runners-up will once again receive US$100,000.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, underscored the tournament’s significance, saying “The return of the West Indies Championship is a crucial pillar in our cricket development pathway. Having eight (8) teams competing across the region reinforces our commitment to first-class cricket, which remains the foundation for developing Test cricketers.”
He added “This year we have introduced several initiatives geared at broadening the experience of our regional players by exposing them to many of the challenges they would otherwise only experience on tour. We are happy to be taking the championship around the region again ensuring that players are tested in the various conditions our region serves up. This can only add to the resilience needed by our players to excel at the international level.”
The seven-round competition featured defending champions Guyana Harpy Eagles, Barbados Pride, Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC), Jamaica Scorpions, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force, West Indies Academy, and Windward Islands Volcanoes. Both the West Indies Academy and CCC have been retained as permanent fixtures following impressive debut campaigns.
The Guyana Harpy Eagles secured last year’s thrilling championship, claiming their seventh title in nine years after entering the final round with three other teams still in contention.
This year’s tournament begins in late January, with three rounds of action-packed matches scheduled from 29 January to 15 February. The first round will be hosted across Guyana, Trinidad, St Vincent, and Antigua, with subsequent rounds extending to Barbados, Dominica, and St Kitts.
Following a short break, the competition resumes on 5 March, with the fourth and fifth rounds held in Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia, Guyana, and Antigua. The final two rounds will be contested from 2 to 12 April in Antigua, St Kitts, St Lucia, and Trinidad.
