Spurs linked with England midfielder in possible cut-price January deal
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing an England international who will likely become a free agent at the end of the season.
Angel Gomes’ football journey so far
Angel Gomes was born in Greater London, but began his career at Manchester United where he became their youngest player to make his debut since Duncan Edwards in 1953. It was against Tottenham that he scored his first senior goal for the Red Devils, in a pre-season friendly.
However, despite the promise he showed as a youngster, Gomes signed for LOSC Lille in search of more game time, after receiving only a handful of appearances at his boyhood club. His start to life in France was not straightforward either, as he was immediately loaned to Boavista in Portugal.
Fast forward a few years though and Gomes is thriving at Lille and his performances earned him an England call-up last September, as he came off the bench to make his debut in a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland.
Although Gomes stands at just 5’6” and does not record many goals, he has impressed with his technical play, with long balls and short passes being some of his outstanding strengths.
Spurs are interested in signing Angel Gomes
Tottenham have already been linked with Lille striker Jonathan David and now they are reportedly interested in another of the Ligue 1 sides’ players.
According to TBR, Spurs are interested in signing Angel Gomes at the end of the season when his contract at Lille ends, meaning he would be available as a free agent. However, there is reason to believe that Spurs may attempt to sign the 24-year-old this month in a discounted deal.
Journalist, Charles Jones, said: “They’re [Tottenham] also looking at central midfielders and I don’t think it’s going to be anyone earth-shattering.
“They’ve looked at Angel Gomes, who obviously becomes a free agent in the summer. I think primarily that that’s what they’re trying to trigger at the moment just to get him as that free agent to come in the summer. But I know there’s also been some inclination as to like, but what about now?
“What about if he came now? Because obviously, he wouldn’t cost that much to get in now. They’ve also looked at a few others.”
Tottenham could use a new midfielder like Gomes
Tottenham’s current priority looks to be signing a striker, while getting in a temporary centre-back seems like a sensible approach, although appears unlikely. But another position they may look to strengthen is the midfield and Gomes would certainly help improve the depth of the Tottenham first-team squad.
Rodrigo Bentancur has spent a lot of time on the sidelines in recent times due to both suspensions and injuries, while none of James Maddison, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are undroppable.
While a counterargument to signing a new midfielder is that Lucas Bergvall has been performing well and needs more minutes in the first team, signing Gomes on either a free transfer or for a reduced sum feels like an opportunity too good to pass up.
