Inside eerie abandoned ‘honeymoon hotel’ overlooking Niagara Falls that was once packed with celebs and politicians

UNBELIEVABLE images show the inside of the crumbling “time capsule” Fallside Hotel.

What once was a hotspot for politicians and celebrities has transformed into a paradise for rot and mould.

Unbelievable images of Fallside shows remnants of what would have been an ultra-luxurious, grand hotel with enormous chandeliers and a mirrored piano.

But all of this – including beds, TVs, and other furniture, was left there to rot.

It looks to be post-apocalyptic with even vases of fake flowers still sitting on side cabinets next to patterned sofas.

Mould is seen creeping up nearly every single wall, with sheets of wallpaper peeling off and moss in the carpets.

It’s apparent that squatters had slept in the building too, with rooms that had been torn to pieces.

Thieves had also got hold of copper wiring as the plumbing was left in tatters and massive holes in the roof.

But some of the other areas of the hotel had been kept with all its beauty, like the ballroom which appears to be relatively unscathed.

One of those who explored the rotting hotel is photographer Matthew Christopher, who runs Abandoned America.

The urban explorer was granted permission to enter the decaying hotel and take chilling images.

He told The Sun: “The Fallside Hotel was one of my favourite places.

“The term ‘time capsule’ gets thrown around a lot with abandoned places, but this place truly was one.

“It was a bit eerie wandering around the building considering the amount of undisturbed decay, but also very peaceful.

“Some of the areas looked brand new, and some were in very bad condition, as a result of scrappers stealing parts of the roof, which allowed water damage and mold to take hold.”

Matthew also explained how paramount the hotel was for the area at the time.

He added: “While I was there, I thought about how important this place had been to the community: graduations, honeymoons, business deals, and vacations all had taken place there, and it was likely a part of many fond memories.

“It’s important to me to respect that, and to honour the space I have been allowed to photograph.”

Matthew hopes that with his photographs, he “can help provide a final, fond farewell” to the hotel “that meant a lot to many people before being reborn”.

The Fallside has had many names – and owners – over the years that could never stick.

Originally it was built as a Treadway Inn in 1957 on a whopping 3.8 acre plot in Niagara Falls, New York.

Treadway Inn looked to provide visitors and residents alike a place “to dine, gather in meetings, entertain guests, discuss business, and convene socially”.

The hotel gave an ultra-luxurious experience back then, with individually controlled air conditioning, “the most comfortable and modern furniture” as well as their own TVs.

Rates ranged from $8.35 for single rooms to $36 for three room suites.

And guests wouldn’t even have to leave as the breakfast was as cheap as 60 cents while dinner would be between $1.75 to $5.25 in one of the beautiful, big rooms that overlooked the falls.

In a resurgence of the city’s economy that had led to closures of hotels around the area, Niagara Falls became a popular honeymoon destination.

The inn even held such significance that when Senator John F. Kennedy visited the area during his presidential campaign in 1960, he did his speech in front of it.

Three years after this significant moment, a new, bigger Treadyway Inn was built – but a whopping four miles away while the old one became the Parkway Inn.

This had over 200 guest rooms, a restaurant, a cocktail lounge, dining rooms and public rooms, administrative offices and what was dubbed the “Gaslight Terrace”.

But by the 1970s, Niagara Falls was slipping into economic ruin due to toxic waste in the area.

Both residents and tourists stopped visiting in the thousands, as home prices and income began to fall with more of Niagara Falls’ residents falling below poverty level.

In the early 1970s the Parkway Inn became a Ramada Inn, and a few years later was rebranded as the Days Inn Riverview.

In yet another desperate attempt to bolster visitors, a Nintendo Entertainment System was installed in every room, as well as an outdoor heated pool and casinos nearby.

But it was then taken over again in 2005 and rebranded as the Fallside Hotel and Conference Center.

Here it was clear that the hotel – that had barely changed for decades – was in dire need of a makeover.

Reviews from 2008 paint a bad picture of the hotel, with one calling it a “mess” with “very poor” service – and the room being “totally a disaster”.

The hotel shut down the following year in 2009.

After years of abandonment, the process for demolition began in 2014 and the new Doubletree by Hilton opened in 2016.
