‘I was mortified’
Straight-talking Naomi, 56, writes: “One night I was in the mood but on my own, so when I got out of a bath I got into bed with my new rose vibrator.
“I realised that it had a sucking feature, so I decided to try that out on my nipple.
“I know it’s not common to engage in foreplay with yourself. But for this particular night, I decided I would take my time with myself.
“Well, it all went well.
“Afterwards, I put the rose back in the box and then I left it beside me, as if we were going to have post-coital pillow talk.
“The next morning, my 15-year-old came in and saw the box and said, ‘Mum!’.
“All women have vibrators,” I said, ‘You can get them at Urban Outfitters now’.
But I was mortified. And on top of that, my nipple was throbbing all day.”
British-born Naomi has opened up about her sex life and libido in Dare I Say It: Everything I Wish I Knew About Menopause.
In an extract from the book published in The Times magazine, Naomi tells how she found out she was in early menopause with night sweats, then brain fog and skin dryness, when she was 36.
“She has been so open about her battles that other women have approached her for advice and encouraged her to write her book.
Naomi writes: “I’ve always shied away from jumping on the soapbox.
“But the menopause conversation requires us to get honest, loud. One of the funniest things that has happened as a result: random celebrities now text me regularly to tell me they are in menopause.”
She and her first husband Perfect Couple actor Liev Schreiber, 57, needed fertility treatment to conceive their two children. And after they split she lost her libido.
When Naomi finally started to get frisky with fellow star Billy Crudup, 56, who she went on to marry, she tried — and failed — to hide her HRT patch.
Billy said: “Hey, if it makes you feel better, I’ve got grey hairs on my balls.”
She said: “Those, to date, remain the most romantic words I’ve ever heard, on screen or off — and that includes the script of every movie I’ve been in.”
